"I fell in love with being on SGA and being able to speak for students and trying to bring people together."

When Ruthie Karsteter first visited Edinboro, something clicked鈥攄espite her initial reluctance to follow her older brother, Paige, who was already a senior there. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want to follow in my big brother鈥檚 footsteps; I wanted to be my own person,鈥 she admits. 鈥淏ut after the tour, I absolutely fell in love with the campus. I left鈥100 percent鈥攍ike, 鈥楳om, this is where I鈥檓 going.鈥欌 The small-school feel matched her roots鈥攃lasses that feel personal, faces you recognize鈥攁nd soon she was all鈥慽n.

Student government, however, was not the plan. 鈥淚 definitely didn鈥檛 want to do student government,鈥 she says. Her brother鈥攁lready involved鈥攕aw something she didn鈥檛: 鈥淩uth, you love people鈥 you get to bring people together.鈥 She ran for director of public relations, won, and discovered she loved being a bridge. 鈥淚 fell in love with being on SGA鈥 being able to speak for students and bring people together and hear people鈥檚 voices.鈥 Now, as SGA president, she鈥檚 focused on impact over spotlight.

That impact begins with access. Edinboro鈥檚 club rushes, welcome鈥憌eek events, and an open鈥慸oor SGA office keep participation simple. 鈥淎nyone can come in and talk to me,鈥 says Ruthie, who also supervises the SGA game room. The priority this year: build the Senate鈥斺渨e have a ton of openings鈥濃攁nd strengthen the relationship between SGA and clubs by getting E鈥慴oard members out to meetings so 鈥減eople know our faces and who to come to.鈥

For Ruthie, leadership isn鈥檛 about titles or authority; it鈥檚 about connection. Coming from a graduating class of just 86 students, she thrives in the close-knit atmosphere of Edinboro. She wants every student to feel seen and heard, hoping they view her as 鈥渁 friend and a peer more than just a leader.鈥 Her favorite memories are the simple, joyful moments that define the campus community: cheering at homecoming games, having random snowball fights, and even taking her cat, Karma, for walks in a stroller. 鈥淚 want people to remember seeing me walking my cat around,鈥 she says.

Beyond SGA, Ruthie works鈥攃atering weddings, counter shifts, babysitting, even a coffee shop stint. She unwinds outdoors: camping and fishing鈥攁nd she loves Pennsylvania winters.

Ask what she hopes students see when they meet her, and the answer is simple: 鈥淪omeone they can just come up and talk to.鈥 A smile you can鈥檛 miss, a conversation that doesn鈥檛 rush鈥攁pproachable first, officer second.

Ruthie鈥檚 story shows how 水多多导航 turns connection into confidence鈥攊nviting students to step in, try something new, and build leadership skills alongside a supportive community and flexible, real鈥憌orld opportunities.
