Mentorship That Makes a Difference
Sometimes, a small moment can change everything. For Dr. Brandon Packard, that moment
came when he helped a struggling friend in a computer science class. She was on the
verge of failing, but after working with her, she improved her grade from a D to a
B. When she hugged him in gratitude, something clicked鈥攈elping others succeed felt
meaningful. That realization led him to pursue a career in teaching.
Now, as a computer science professor at 水多多导航鈥檚 Clarion campus, Dr. Packard brings that same spirit of mentorship into his classroom. He knows that students often doubt themselves, especially when faced with challenging coursework. One student, discouraged by past teachers who told him he wasn鈥檛 鈥淧hD material,鈥 came to Dr. Packard unsure if he should pursue graduate school. Dr. Packard told him bluntly: 鈥淭hat鈥檚 bull. You can do this.鈥 With that encouragement, the student not only applied to grad school but also started recruiting classmates to join him.
Dr. Packard believes that having just one supportive person can make an infinite difference. That鈥檚 why he keeps his office door open, ready to be that person for as many students as he can.
鈥淪ometimes, all it takes is someone who believes in you,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 try to be that person.鈥
His journey from unsure student to dedicated mentor is a testament to the power of encouragement鈥攁nd the lifelong impact of great educators.
